Which Scripted Series Are Thriving, Ailing or In Between?
In finicky TV Land, where executives strive to please advertisers with high ratings numbers, no TV show can consider itself truly safe. Most vulnerable are the newest shows, which haven't had much time to draw audiences in. But long-running hit shows can also slip quickly out of favor, once they start showing some wear and tear. Even a great first year for a series doesn't guarantee a second or third one (witness NBC's Heroes).
On the other hand, lots of smart, well-written shows do manage to find their footing and entertain us year after year. Sometimes, they're overshadowed by newer, trendier series -- but that doesn't mean they're going anywhere. You may not hear a lot about ABC's Desperate Housewives or Grey's Anatomy, or NBC's Parenthood, but they're still attracting viewers in large enough numbers to keep them going.
The networks have offered a standard commitment (they'll order a full season's worth of episodes) to several new fall shows. Among those with a healthy pulse are CBS's Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods, Mike & Molly, The Defenders and $#*! My Dad Says; NBC's Outsourced, The Event and Law & Order: LA; Fox's Raising Hope; ABC's No Ordinary Family and Better With You; and The CW's Hellcats and Nikita.
NBC's Community doesn't have much buzz, and its morning-after ratings numbers are dismal. But once you factor in DVR numbers, the show holds its own, coming in just below the most popular comedies on TV, like The Office and Modern Family.
At ABC, neither Undercovers nor Detroit 1-8-7 was a hit out of the gate. But the network has given each of these relatively strong shows a little more time to wow viewers (and more importantly, advertisers). And Fox is allowing Human Target to hang in there a little while longer; it just ordered two more scripts.
The CW's Life Unexpected, which is in its second season, didn't make the list when the network announced its full-season pickups. Fox's Running Wilde and The Good Guys are in the same boat: The network hasn't mentioned them despite announcing its decision to pick up a full season of Raising Hope. And CBS has cut back on its episode order for Medium, from 22 to 13 episodes. That's usually a death knell.
These four shows have already been put out of their low-ratings misery: ABC's My Generation, The Gates and The Whole Truth; and NBC's Outlaw.

Usher's VMA Performance To Be Worthy Of A 'King'
Awards-show executive producer teases Ush's 'best televised dance routine' in years.

LOS ANGELES — The success of Usher's "OMG" is as much a testament to his unyielding popularity as an artist as it is his ability to, well, dance his ass off. That's particularly apparent in the Video Music Award-nominated video for the song, which features Ush and a bevy of beauties popping, locking, pivoting and posing in ways we never thought possible. Quite simply, the man can move.
So when it came time to plot out his VMA performance, well, Usher's team -- and the brain trust behind the show -- didn't have a whole lot of trouble coming up with a concept. The dancing was going to be front and center. The only question was: How could they take things to the next level.
"We all sat in a room and came up with a concept for the stage, and then we took that concept to Usher," VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick told MTV News. "We said to him, 'We want to do the best televised dance routine that you've done in years. Let's show why you're the king.' "
And Ush's Sunday night performance is very much an affair worthy of royalty. Full of eye-popping moves, hip-dipping dancers and more special effects than a Hollywood blockbuster, it makes full use of not just the epic VMA stage (which practically engulfs the entirety of Nokia Theater), but the space behind it.
While we can't give away too many details, based on the rehearsals we saw Thursday, the off-the-wall choreography is only part of the attraction. There are lasers and LED lights, stunts, slides and even some props. Like we said, it's kind of like a Hollywood blockbuster. And kind of a coronation too. After all, Usher is the king.
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday.

Have no fear: The close friendship between Rihanna and Katy Perry remains in tact, despite that fact that RiRi ditched out on her pal's wedding last week.
"Thankfully, she understood," Rihanna told E! News, when asked about missing the lavish Indian nups.
Rihanna says it was simply work that prevented her from attending the wedding, as she's prepping for the release of her new album, Loud, and needed to be available to make any last-minute decisions.
"The only reason I couldn't make it was I was really really swamped with work," the singer explained. "I've got an album coming out in two weeks, I have a lot going on, I just switched management...I needed to be close (to the action)."
Still, Rihanna says she was totally bummed that wasn't able to support Perry as she said "I do" to Russell Brand.
"I was crushed," she told People.com. "I was really looking forward to it. But at least she understood. And I was glad I could at least throw her a bachelorette party and be involved somehow."

Miley Cyrus will cement her transition from kiddie TV star to teenage vixen in her upcoming movie "LOL," which was just picked up for distribution by Lionsgate, according to Variety.
The English-language remake of the 2008 French hit reportedly includes a number of scenes that might make Cyrus' "Hannah Montana" fans blush; her character is said to lose her virginity, smoke pot and kiss two girlfriends on the lips.
Co-star Demi Moore told MTV News in April that though Cyrus — whose parents announced their divorce this week — plays a wild child in the film, in real life she's "incredibly grounded" and not at all like her "LOL" character.
"[Miley] is a true professional, and she truly has a wonderful family," Moore said. "It really shows." The veteran actress plays the overbearing, confounded mom of Cyrus' character, who gets freaked out after accidentally reading her daughter's journal and finding out just how out of touch they have become.
The movie, which also stars "Twilight" alum Ashley Greene, does not have a release date. Like the French original, it is written and directed by Lisa Azuelo; the cast also includes Thomas Jane ("Hung"), Gina Gershon ("Rescue Me"), Marlo Thomas ("That Girl"), Fisher Stevens ("Awake"), Adam Sevani ("Step Up 3D"), Jay Hernandez ("Takers") and Austin Nichols ("One Tree Hill").
Cyrus and Greene were spotted shooting scenes for the film in Detroit earlier this summer and recently moved to Paris to continue production. In photos released last month, a smiling Cyrus, embraced at the waist by co-star Douglas Booth, is standing alongside a pensive-looking Greene and other castmembers Ashley Hinshaw and Lina Esco. In other shots, Booth and Cyrus are snuggling on a double-decker bus while Greene is on another bus. Booth and Cyrus also were filmed standing on a bridge chatting.
Cyrus has said that in her post-"Hannah Montana" career, she's looking to film more serious, mature movies, and that she intends to take a break from music to pursue her film career.
"I'm working on lots of different films: drama, action, comedy," she said. "I like challenges, so I'm doing a little bit of everything.
"The more I make music that doesn't truly inspire me, the more I feel like I'm blending in with everyone else," she added. "I'm taking some time off [from music]."

Beyonce's Mom Denies Pregnancy Rumors

Not so fast. By now, the Knowles family is used to the constant rumors about Beyoncé's reported pregnancies. But in an unusual move, the singer's mother, Tina Knowles, is slated to appear on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Thursday to refute the latest claims.
The latest round of whispers started earlier this week when Us Magazine, citing an unnamed source, reported that the 29-year-old star was expecting her first child with hubby and fellow mogul Jay-Z.
But according to a clip of Thursday's show obtained by gossip site TMZ, Tina Knowles flatly denied those stories. "I heard that, but I'm here to clear the rumors up. The truth is it's not Beyoncé that's pregnant, it's me," she jokingly told Ellen. "No, it's not true. Not right now. I'm looking forward to it. With all the rumors, by now I should have about five or six grandchildren."
Tina does have one grandchild so far, 6-year-old Daniel Julez Smith, the son of her youngest daughter Solange.
Before the denial, Us reported that a source said, "B was shocked. She loves kids, but she wasn't ready to be a mother just yet ... She really wanted to get her album done and tour the world again." Another unnamed source claimed the singer was in her first trimester and that she considered the pregnancy "a gift from God and she's so happy."
This is the second time this year that a rumor has surfaced about Beyoncé being pregnant. In March, her representatives quickly shot down reports that Beyoncé was pregnant.
The couple, who married in 2008, have always kept their private life private, but Beyoncé has been open to talking about motherhood. Earlier this year, she spoke to Allure about the prospect of being a mother. "I definitely want to have a child, but I know from my nephew it's a lot. I hope that those things will just happen naturally. I still haven't had time to relax," she said.

'Batman 3' Will Be Called 'The Dark Knight Rises'
Director Christopher Nolan adds that Riddler will not appear in third 'Batman' film.

In 2012, the Dark Knight will rise.
At long last, Christopher Nolan third "Batman" film. And as was the case with "The Dark Knight," the very mention of Batman himself is nowhere to be found. Instead, the critically acclaimed director of "Memento" and "Inception" will call his next film "The Dark Knight Rises."
Nolan confirmed the title in an interview with The Los Angeles Times, adding that the developing comic book adaptation will not have a role for the Riddler. The famous Batman rogue has long been considered a leading candidate to be the villain in "The Dark Knight Rises," with actors including Joseph Gordon-Levitt rumored for the part. But Nolan ended the debate with one rather definitive statement: "It won't be the Riddler."
In addition to confirming the title and removing one possible villain from the pool, Nolan stated that Warner Bros. executives have agreed with the director's desire to avoid 3-D for the third "Batman" film. Instead, "The Dark Knight Rises" will employ "high-definition approaches and IMAX cameras to strike out on a different cinematic path than the stereoscopic technology that, for better or worse, has become the dominant conversation in the blockbuster sector."
The pieces are certainly falling into place for "The Dark Knight Rises." Not only has Nolan announced the film's new title, he's also started the hunt for new actors. Earlier this month, his "Inception" collaborator Tom Hardy landed an unidentified lead role, with many assuming that he's taking on a villainous part. With his secret identity preserved, only one thing is certain about Hardy's character: He's not the Riddler.
"We'll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we'll be introducing some new ones," the director said.
"The Dark Knight Rises" is scheduled to hit theaters on July 20, 2012. Shooting begins in April in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Ben Affleck May Make Movies In Boston, But He Won?t Run For Office There
Ben Affleck sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk about his new movie, 'The Town.' Like his directorial debut, 'Gone, Baby, Gone,' it's set in his hometown of Boston. Does he worry about being known as the guy who makes movies in Boston?
That was one of the things that almost made me not want to do The Town. I thought, I�??m going to be the guy who makes crime movies in Somerville, [Mass.]. I guess from an actor�??s point-of-view, you worry about being typecast.It sounds like it wasn't enough to stop him from doing it, though :)Apparently, Ben's 'The Town' co-star, Jon Hamm, said walking around Boston with Ben was like walking around with the mayor.
[Laughs] He�??s probably exaggerating. People probably know who I am in Boston just because of Good Will Hunting and Gone Baby Gone. It�??s a double-edged sword: Being the local boy you definitely get some support and you also�?�there�??s tougher scrutiny.So would Ben, who's interest in politics is well-known, ever consider running for office there?
I don't want to hold office. Every day that seems like a worse and worse job to have. Look at the level of political discourse now. It's very depressing to me. I did a lot of research down in D.C. when I did State of Play [Affleck played a congressman in the 2009 film], and it's not unlike Hollywood. It's a one-horse town. Everyone's jockeying with one another for power, prestige, and image and they'll stab each other in the back as fast as they can. The only difference is the stakes are a bit higher, which makes it sadder.I don't know... Following a morning of headline-making cheating rumors, Justin Timberlake brushed the gossip aside as he got to work on the set of a new project in Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday (October 27).
The "Sexy Back" stud donned a snazzy suit as he ran through an action scene for "I'm.mortal" alongside his wig-wearing co-star Amanda Seyfried.
As for the movie, "I'm.mortal is a Sci-Fi/Thriller being directed by Andrew Niccol while also starring Johnny Galecki and Olivia Wilde.
A synopsis of the film via IMDB tells: "In the not-too-distant future the aging gene has been switched off. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency and the way people pay for luxuries and necessities. The rich can live forever, while the rest try to negotiate for their immortality. A poor young man who comes into a fortune of time, though too late to help his mother from dying. He ends up on the run from a corrupt police force known as 'time keepers'."

'Breaking Dawn' Officially Taps Michael Sheen To Return As Aro
British star will reprise his role as the Volturi vampire for the 'Twilight' conclusion.

In case anyone was unsure, it's now official: Michael Sheen is returning to the Twi-verse as the Volturi vampire Aro in "Breaking Dawn."
The 41-year-old Brit has signed on the dotted line, according to a Variety report. Sheen first appeared as Aro in 2009's "New Moon," but his character did not play a part in this year's "Eclipse."
Though there was no official word until now that Sheen would reprise the role, it was widely assumed that he would revisit the part. Even last year, however, Sheen was noncommittal about it.
"Who knows? Nothing has been spoken about yet," the actor told MTV News in September 2009.
That was then. Now Sheen's back in the mix. Filming on the two parts of "Breaking Dawn" is about to get under way in Louisiana, with Bill Condon in the director's chair. Part 1 will arrive in theaters in November 2011 and Part 2 will open in November 2012.
The ranks of the "Twilight" vampires has grown as of late. Maggie Grace, MyAnna Buring, Mia Maestro, Casey LaBow and Christian Camargo have all signed on to play members of the Denali coven. Lee Pace leads the crew of American Nomads, while Noel Fisher is the biggest name among the Romanian coven. Mackenzie Foy, meanwhile, will play Renesmee, the daughter of Robert Pattinson's Edward and Kristen Stewart's Bella.
"To be honest, [the script is] never very striking, only because I know it," Stewart told us recently about "Breaking Dawn." "You read it until you get to the last page just hoping that it doesn't let you down, going, 'OK, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's what I got too, mm-hmm, that's what I got.' It's really good. It's like, I don't know, it's very solid."

Charlie Sheen?s Wife Leaves LA With Their Twin Sons
People is reporting that Charlie Sheen's wife, Brooke Mueller, is so stressed out over everything that's going on with the actor that she's taken their twin boys and moved about an hour outside of Los Angeles.
"Brooke is close to having a nervous breakdown over all that is going on with Charlie, so she took the boys to live in a rental house away from Los Angeles," the source tells PEOPLE. "She is still taking outpatient help with her addiction problems and would have totally relapsed if she had not gotten out of town."Another source reportedly confirmed to People that Brooke is again seeking treatment. Brooke is said to be deciding between two homes to stay in: one in Laguna Beach and the other in Santa Barbara.Things aren't going well between Brooke and Charlie, according to one source.
"Brooke often throws down the phone when she speaks to Charlie," the source continues. "Brooke is totally stressed and needs to stay away from him and L.A. and start a new life."I can't even IMAGINE how crazy things must be around Charlie and Brooke right now. Jessica Simpson Talks Running Into Nick Lachey
Nothing's more awkward than running into an ex -- especially when you're both with new loves.
Jessica Simpson was out on a date with her current beau Eric Johnson last week at Hollywood hotspot The Red O...which just so happened to be the same spot where her ex-husband Nick Lachey was dining with his on-again, off-again girlfriend Vanessa Minnillo!
But the couples avoided any uncomfortable conversation, as Simpson, 30, opted to stay away from Lachey. "He was at the same restaurant," The singer-reality star confirmed to USA Today. "I didn't speak to him."
Perhaps Simpson was too blissfully happy with Johnson, 31, to be bothered with her ex. "He definitely makes me very happy," Simpson tells USA Today about her boyfriend. "He brings out a lot of light in me and makes me very comfortable being who I am. It's nice to be with somebody who praises you for the right reasons."
Still, Simpson, who's gearing up for another reality series about facing your fears, isn't ready to be a "newlywed" again anytime soon. "Wedding? Right now I'm focused on my precious nephew and godson," she says.
