Ganzi: Gateway to Tibet

There is a way to experience authentic Tibetan culture without actually visiting Tibet -- head to Ganzi Tibetan prefecture in China, just a couple of hours drive west of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan. Ganzi is made up of 18 scenic counties boasting alpine forests, soaring Himalayan Mountains, grasslands, canyon-like valleys and fast flowing rivers. 

Mention the old Tibetan trading town of Kangding to any Chinese and inevitably they will wax poetic about the town made famous by an old Chinese folk song called ?Kangding Love Song." Today, Kangding has lost a bit of its romantic luster, but wander the side streets and there is still some Tibetan charm within the modernity.
