A few weeks ago my husband and I left the kids at home and took off for a little adult getaway. We were excited for a couple of days to ourselves to relax, reconnect and be in a room that wasn?t littered with sneakers and nail polish. (Before you call child services on us, you should know that our kids are teenagers, and perfectly capable of taking care of themselves. Besides, all we had to do was refer to our trip as a ?romantic weekend? for them to decide they wanted no part of it.)
Retro Feel, New Digs
We headed to the newly remodeled Del Marcos Hotel in downtown Palm Springs ? a beautiful gem built in 1947 by the famed architect William F. Cody. With its mid-century modern architecture and vintage furniture, you fully expect Dean Martin and the rest of the Rat Pack to emerge from one of the rooms and sit by the (saltwater) pool with a cocktail. And they would feel right at home ? the music throughout the hotel is retro, too ? no blasting boomboxes allowed. Call us old fogeys, but we found the music to be one of our favorite things about the hotel ? although maybe the neighbors could have done without my rendition of ?Luck Be A Lady.?
Up Close And Personal
At the risk of sounding too gushy, we loved everything about this place. Its small size (only 17 rooms), the attention to detail (we had what looked like and authentic hanging mosaic from the ?50s in our room), its location nestled against the San Jacinto Mountains, and the fact that the ?front desk? consists of one person sitting behind a (very nicely designed) table. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive, and it felt like a truly personal experience. After staying at the Del Marcos I?m not sure I?ll ever be able to set foot again in a 600-room mega chain hotel, where you have to walk what feels like an entire city block just to get to the concierge.
